In episode 2 of the Fanalytics podcast, Mike Lewis and Ada Chong weigh in about the controversy surrounding Native American mascots, why mascots are important for branding, and the financial impact Native American mascots on NCAA basketball teams have on schools.

Let’s touch on the controversy surrounding Native American mascots.

According to cleveland.com - here's a look at some background on the MLB Cleveland Indians' Chief Wahoo logo.

  • Beginning in the 2019 season, the Cleveland Indians will stop using the Chief Wahoo logo on their uniforms but they will still be selling merchandise.

  • The Cleveland baseball team became the Indians in 1915.

  • In 1947, the first version of Chief Wahoo was designed.

  • But just four years later – the image of Chief Wahoo was altered. This is the logo still used today.

  • In 2016, Wahoo became a secondary logo. After years of protest, the Indian’s owner said the team moved to the block C as the primary logo.
